Question 1 / 98

Select the correct passive form of the given sentence.

Do not buy medicines without the doctor's prescription.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. Medicines should not be bought without the doctor’s prescription.

Basic rules to be followed for Active/Passive conversions are:

1. The object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb.

2. Only 3rd form of the verb will be used as a main verb in the Passive Voice.

The given sentence is in active voice.

Important Points to Ponder:

  • The sentence is a suggestion.
  • It is suggesting that we should not buy medicine without the doctor’s prescription.
  • ‘Need’ is a semi-modal verb and we use need mostly in the negative form to indicate that there is no obligation or necessity to do something.
  • The sentence is not talking about obligations. Similarly, ‘might’ and ‘could’ do not show the intended meaning of the sentence and are the wrong modal verbs for this context.

As the selected option follows all the rules, hence it will be correct.
