If the price of a washing machine is first increased by 25% and then decreased by 25%, then the net change in price will be a:

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 6.25% decrease

Let the price of the washing machine = ₹x

After the increase, prize of the washing machine = x + 25% of x = x + 0.25x = 1.25x

New prize, after the decrease = 1.25x - 25% of 1.25x = 1.25x - 0.3125x = 0.9375x 

So,

Net percent change in the prize of the washing machine = (0.9375x−xx)×100\left ( \frac{0.9375x-x}{x} \right )\times 100 = -6.25% 

Hence,

The prize of the washing machine got decreased by 6.25%.
