SSC CHSL 2024 PYQ — Question 55

SSC CHSL - 03 July 2024 - Shift 2 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q55

What is the area of the region formed by the two linear equations 2x + y = 6 and 2x – y = –2 and bounded by these lines and the x-axis?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 8 sq. units.

2x + y = 6.....................1

2x – y = –2....................2

Add equations 1 and 2

⇒ 4x = 4

⇒ x = 1

and y = 4

So, the intersection point (1, 4).

On x- axis y = 0

Put y = 0 in equation 1

x = 3

Intersection point (3, 0)

Put y = 0 in equation 2

x = -1

Intersection point (-1, 0)

So, the area of the triangle = 12×∣[(x1(y2−y3)+x2(y3−y1)+x3(y1−y2)]∣\frac{1}{2}\times|[(x_1(y_2-y_3)+x_2(y_3-y_1)+x_3(y_1-y_2)]|

= 12×∣[(1(0−0)+3(0−4)−1(4−0)]∣\frac{1}{2}\times|[(1(0-0)+3(0-4)-1(4-0)]|

= 12×∣−16∣\frac{1}{2}\times|-16|

= 8 sq. unit
