Using tan (A - B) = tanA−tanB1+tanAtanB\frac{tanA-tanB}{1+tanA tanB} find the value of tan15º.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 3 i.e. 2 - √3.

tan15º = tan(45º - 30º)

Using tan (A - B) = tanA−tanB1+tanAtanB\frac{tanA-tanB}{1+tanA tanB}

⇒ tan(45º−30º)=tan45º−tan30º1+tan45ºtan30ºtan(45º - 30º) = \frac{tan45º-tan30º}{1+tan45º tan30º}

⇒ tan15º=1−131+1×13tan15º = \frac{1-{1\over{\sqrt3}}}{1+1\times{1\over{\sqrt3}}}

⇒ tan15º=3−133+13tan15º = \frac{{\sqrt3-1\over{\sqrt3}}}{{\sqrt3+1\over{\sqrt3}}}

⇒ tan15º=3−13+1tan15º = \frac{{\sqrt3-1}}{{\sqrt3+1} }

On rationalizing,

⇒ tan15º=3−13+1×3−13−1tan15º = {{{\sqrt3-1}}\over{{\sqrt3+1}}}\times{{{\sqrt3-1}}\over{{\sqrt3-1}}}

⇒ tan15º=(3−1)232−12tan15º = {{{{(\sqrt3}-1})^2}\over{{\sqrt3^2-1^2}}}

⇒ tan15º=32+12−2×33−1tan15º = {{{{\sqrt3^2}+1^2-2\times\sqrt3}}\over{{3-1}}}

⇒ tan15º=3+1−232tan15º = {{{{3}+1-2\sqrt3}}\over{{2}}}

⇒ tan15º=4−232tan15º = {{{4-2\sqrt3}}\over{{2}}}

⇒ tan15º=2(2−3)2tan15º = {{{2(2-\sqrt3)}}\over{{2}}}

⇒ tan15º=(2−3)tan15º = (2-\sqrt3)
