SSC CPO - 10 Nov 2022 - Shift 1 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q141

Two trains, running between Bangalore and Chennai, start at the same time from their respective locations and proceed towards each other at the speed of 80km/h and 95km/h. When they meet, it is found that one train has travelled 180km more than the other.The distance between Bangalore and Chennai is _______.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 2100 km

Let us assume that both trains traveled for 't' hours as they meet each other.

Thus Let us note the time traveled and speed for both trains:-

⇒ Train 1
     v = 80km/hr
     t = t hours
     d = 80t km

⇒ Train 2
     v = 95 km/hr
     t = t hours
    d = 95t km

We know the difference between the distance traveled by both trains is 180km.

Thus,

⇒ (Distance traveled by train 2) - (Distance traveled by train 2) = 180km

⇒ 95t - 80t = 180

⇒ 15t = 180

⇒ t = 12 hours

Thus, we can now get what distance both trains traveled till they met each other, and we can know how much distance is there between Bangalore and Chennai.

Thus:-

⇒ Distance Traveled by Train 1 = (80)(12)
                                                        = 960 km

⇒ Distance Traveled by Train 2 = (95)(12)
                                                        = 1140 km

⇒ Distance between both Cities = Distance traveled by Train 1 + Distance traveled by Train 2
                                                          = 960 + 1140

⇒ 2100 km
