Two pipes A and B can fill a tank in 1131{1\over3} hours and 2 hows, respectively. If both the pipes are opened together then in how much time will the tank be filled.

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 48 minutes.

Pipe A can fill the tank in = 4/3 hours

 Pipe B can fill the tank = 2 hours.

Pipe A fills (143=34)( \frac{1}{\frac{4}{3}} = \frac{3}{4})  of the tank per hour.

 Pipe B fills (12)( \frac{1}{2} ) of the tank per hour

Combined rate = 34+12=34+24=54\frac{3}{4} + \frac{1}{2} = \frac{3}{4} + \frac{2}{4} = \frac{5}{4}

Time taken = 154=45\frac{1}{\frac{5}{4}} = \frac{4}{5} × 60 = 48 minutes.
