Two containers of equal capacity are full of a mixture of milk and water. In the first, the ratio of milk to water is 3 : 7 and in the second, it is 7 : 9. Now, both mixtures are mixed in a bigger container. What is the resulting ratio of milk to water?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 59 : 101.

Let the capacity of each container = 1 litre

First container:

Milk = 3103\over10 litres

Water = 7107\over10 litres

Second container:

Milk = 7167\over16 litres

Water = 9169\over16 litres

Now, both mix

Milk = 3103\over10 + 7167\over16 = 118160118\over160

Water = 7107\over10 + 9169\over16 = 202160202\over160

Milk : Water = 118 : 202 = 59 : 101
