There is a 21-liter mixture of milk and water. The ratio of milk and water in the mixture is 4 : 3. Find the amount of water (in litres) that should be added to this mixture so that the resulting mixture has 50% water in it.

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 2 i.e. 3.

Water = 37×21\frac{3}{7} × 21 = 9 litres

Milk = 21 - 9 = 12 litres

Let x be the water added:

9+x21+x=12\frac{9 + x}{21 + x} = \frac{1}{2}

⇒ 2(9 + x) = 21 + x

⇒ 18 + 2x = 21 + x

⇒ x = 3 litres
