The value of a machine depreciates at the rate of 25% each year. If the difference between its values at the end of the third and the fourth year is ₹17,199, then what is the value of the machine at the end of the first year?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. ₹1,22,400.

The value of the machine at the end of the 1st year be x.

End of 2nd year: x⋅34=x⋅0.75 x \cdot \frac{3}{4} = x \cdot 0.75

End of 3rd year:x⋅(0.75)2=x⋅0.5625 x \cdot (0.75)^2 = x \cdot 0.5625

End of 4th year: x⋅(0.75)3=x⋅0.421875 x \cdot (0.75)^3 = x \cdot 0.421875

Difference  =  Value at end of 3rd year  - Value at end of 4th yea = ₹17,199

⇒  x(0.5625−0.421875)=17,199⇒x(0.140625)=17,199x(0.5625−0.421875)=17,199⇒x(0.140625)=17,199

⇒x(0.5625−0.421875)=17,199⇒x(0.140625)=17,199 x(0.5625 - 0.421875) = 17,199 \Rightarrow x(0.140625) = 17,199

⇒x=17,1990.140625 x = \frac{17,199}{0.140625} =  122,400
