The sum of three numbers is 252. If the first number is thrice the second and third number is two-third of the first, then the second number is:

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 42

Let the three numbers be a, b and c

a + b + c = 252 .....(1)

Now, a = 3b and c = 2a/3

a = 3c/2

Therefore,

a = 3b = 3c/2

a/3 = b = c/2 .....(2)

Using (1) and (2), we get:

3b + b + 2b = 252

⇒ 6b = 252

⇒ b = 42
