The distance between two railway stations is 1176 km. To cover this distance, an express train takes 5 hours less than a passenger train while the average speed of the passenger train is 70 km/h less than that of the express train. The time taken by the passenger train to complete the travel is:

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e 12 hours

Understanding Application
We will figure out the correct answer by using basic formula of time, speed & distance with use of quadratic equations.

Distance between two railway stations = 1176 km.

Express train takes 5 hours less than a passenger train.

Average speed of the passenger train is 70 km/h less than that of the express train.

Let the speed of express train be x km/hr

Speed of passenger train = (x - 70) km/hr

According to the question

⇒ 1176/(x - 70) - 1176/x = 5

⇒ x2 - 70x = 1176 × 14

⇒ (x - 168) (x + 98) = 0

x = 168

Speed of passenger train will be

⇒ 168 - 70 = 98km/h

Time taken = 1176 / 98 = 12 hours
