The difference of two numbers is 1564. After dividing the larger number by the smaller, we get 6 as quotient and 19 as remainder. What is the smaller number?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 4 i.e. 309.

Given:

The difference of two numbers is 1564.

Formula used:

D = d × q + r

Where, D = Dividend, d= Divisor q = Quotient and r = Remainder

Calculation:

Let the larger number be x and the smaller number be y

So, x - y = 1564 ----(1)

Again, x = (y × 6) + 19 = 6y + 19 ----(2)

Using the value of ‘x’ from eq(2) in eq(1)

⇒ (6y + 19) – y = 1564

⇒ 5y = 1545

⇒ y = 1545/5 = 309

Hence, the smaller number = 309
