The cost of apples is increased by 20% and then decreased by 20%. What is the net pecentage decrease?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

5The correct answer is Option 1 i.e. 4%.

Given:

Increment = 20%

Decrement = 20% of the new number

Concept Used:

Net Decrease = (Final number−original number)original number×100 {(Final\ number - original\ number)\over original\ number} \times 100

Explanation:

Let the original number be 100.

Now, after first increment, new number = 100 + 20% of 100

⇒ New number = 100 + 20 = 120

Now, after decrease in new number, final number = 120 - 20% of 120

⇒ Final number = 120 - 24 = 96

Now, net decrease = (100−96)100×100{(100 - 96) \over 100} \times 100  = 4%

Hence the net pecentage decrease is 4%.
