SSC CGL - 13 April 2022 - Shift 3 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q66

The base of a triangle is increased by 40%. By what percentage (correct to two decimal places) should its height be increased so that te area increases by 60%?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 14.29%

Concept Used :

Area of triangle = ½ × b × h

Solution:

Let the base of the triangle be x cm, so the new base will be 140x/100 = 7x/5

Let the height of the triangle be h cm and the height of new triangle is h1 cm

It is given that increase in area of triangle is 60%

Therefore, [12×7x5×h1][12×x×h]=160100{[{1\over 2} × {7x\over 5} × h1]\over [{1\over 2} × x × h]} = {160\over 100}

 ⇒ h1h=87 {h1\over h} = {8\over 7}

So increase in the height = (8−7)7×100=1007{(8-7)\over 7} × 100 = {100\over 7} = 14.2857.. ≈ 14.29

Hence percentage increase in the height of the triangle is 14.29%.
