Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. renounced.

Context: Here, the Peshwa was forced by the British to give up his official title, so the correct word must mean to formally give up or surrender a position, claim, or title.

Meaning of the words:

  • Remembered: to recall or bring to mind — doesn’t fit.

  • Renounced: to formally give up a claim, right, or title — fits perfectly.

  • Retreated: to move back or withdraw — unrelated to giving up a title.

  • Resigned: to voluntarily leave a job or position — close but not precise, since the Peshwa was not in an employment role but held a hereditary title.

Correct word: Renounced

Reason: The Peshwa was compelled by the British to give up his claim to the title, which makes “renounced” the most suitable word.

Final Sentence: The Peshwa renounced his claim as the ‘Peshwa’.

Hence, the chosen option will be correct.
