Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. retaliated.

Context: The sentence describes how, after being attacked by the Peshwa Bajirao II, the British forces responded and took control of Pune. The word required here should mean fought back or responded to the attack.

Meaning of the words:

  • Revenge: to take vengeance or punish someone for a wrong; a noun, not suitable grammatically here.

  • Retaliated: responded to an attack or injury by attacking back; fits perfectly in this context.

  • Restricted: limited or kept under control; contextually incorrect.

  • Retreated: withdrew or moved back, opposite of what the British did here.

Correct word: Retaliated

Reason: The British were attacked first by the Peshwa, and then they fought back and occupied Pune — an action that clearly signifies retaliation.

Final Sentence: The British forces retaliated and occupied Pune.

Hence, the chosen option will be correct.
