Manish alone can complete a work in 48 days and Pratap alone can complete the same work in half of the time taken by Manish. In how many days will both together complete 1/4 part of the total work?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e.  4 days.

Manish's rate = 1 / 48  of the work per

Pratap's rate = 482=24\frac{48}{2} = 24

=124\frac{1}{24} of the work per day

Combined rate = 148+124\frac{1}{48} + \frac{1}{24}

⇒148+124=148+248=348=116\frac{1}{48} + \frac{1}{24} = \frac{1}{48} + \frac{2}{48} = \frac{3}{48} = \frac{1}{16}

Let
x be the number of days required for both to complete 14\frac{1}{4} of the work.

Work completed = 116×x\frac{1}{16} \times x  = 1/ 4

⇒ x16=14\frac{x}{16} = \frac{1}{4}

⇒ x=16×14=4x = 16 \times \frac{1}{4} = 4 days.
