In the following question, a sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best expresses the same sentence in Indirect/Direct speech.

My mother said, "We went to a market that is five kilometers from here."

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. My mother said that they had gone to a market that was five kilometers from there.

 

  1. As the reporting verb is in the past tense there will be a change in the tense of the reported speech.
  2. There will be no change in the reporting verb as there is no object after it.
  3. "pas tense" will be changed into "past perfect tense".
  4. The inverted comma will be changed into "that".
  5. "here" will be changed into "there".
  6. As all the rules are followed by the chosen option it will be correct.
