In the following question, a sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best expresses the same sentence in Indirect/Direct speech.

He said, "I had gone to my native place last month."

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. He said that he had gone to his native place the month before.

 

  1. As the reporting verb is in the past tense there will be a change in the tense of the reported speech.
  2. There will be no change in the reporting verb as there is no object after it.
  3. "had gone" will remain the same.
  4. The inverted comma will be changed into "that".
  5. "last month" will be changed into "the month before"
  6. As all the rules are followed by the chosen option it will be correct.
