In an experiment, 45% of all the students who appeared are boys and the rest are girls. If 60% of the boys and 70% of the girls passed, then what is the percentage of students who failed?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. 34.5.

Let the total number of appearing students be 100x

Number of boys = 45% of 100x = 45x

Number of girls = 55x

Number of boys passed the examination = 45x × 60/100 = 27x

Number of Boys failed = 45x - 27x = 18x

Number of Girls passed the examination = 55x × 70/100 = 38.5x

Number of girls failed = 55x - 38.5 = 16.5x

Percentage of student failed = (18x + 16.5x)/100x × 100 = 34.5%
