In an election between two candidates, one got 60% of the total valid votes, and 10% of the votes were invalid. If the total number of votes cast were 10800, what was the number of valid votes for the other candidate?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e 3888

Given :

Total votes casted = 10800

Invalid votes = 10% of the total votes casted

Votes of one candidate = 60% of the valid votes

Explanation:

According to the given question,

Total valid votes = (100 - 10) = 90% of the total votes casted

Total valid votes = (90/100) × 10800 = 9,720

The votes obtained by second candidate = (100 - 60) = 40% 0f the valid votes

i.e. (40/100) × 9,720 = 972 × 4 = 3,888

Hence the votes obtained by second candidate are 3,888.
