SSC CGL - 21 July 2023 - Shift 3 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q52

If (x2−1x2=46), (x^2 - \frac{1}{x^2}=4\sqrt{6}), , and x > 1what is the value of (x3−1x3)?(x^3 - \frac{1}{x^3})?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e.  222\sqrt{2}.

x2 - 1/x2 = 464\sqrt6

⇒ x4 + 1/x4 - 2 = 96

 x4 + 1/x4  = 98

⇒ x2 + 1/x2 = (98+2)\sqrt{(98+2)} = 10

⇒ x + 1/x = (10+2)\sqrt{(10+2)} = 12\sqrt{12}

⇒ x - 1/x = (12)2−4\sqrt{(\sqrt{12})^2 - 4}

⇒ x - 1/x = 22\sqrt2

⇒ x3 - 1/x3 = 162\sqrt2 + 62\sqrt2 = 222\sqrt2
