If x2−1x2=42x^2 - \frac{1}{x^2} = 4\sqrt{2}, what is the value of x4−1x4?x^4 - \frac{1}{x^4}?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 24224\sqrt{2}.

x2−1x2=42x^2 - \frac{1}{x^2} = 4\sqrt{2}...................1

Square on both sides

⇒ x4 + (1/x4) - 2 = 32

⇒ x4 + (1/x4) = 34

Now add 2 on both sides

⇒ x4 + (1/x4) + 2 = 34 + 2

⇒ x4 + (1/x4) + 2 = 36

⇒ (x2+1x2)2=36(x^2+\frac{1}{x^2})^2 = 36

(x2+1x2)=6(x^2+\frac{1}{x^2}) = 6......................2

Now,

(x2−1x2)(x2+1x2)=x4−1x4(x^2 - \frac{1}{x^2})(x^2 + \frac{1}{x^2}) = x^4 - \frac{1}{x^4}

 ⇒ x4−1x4x^4 - \frac{1}{x^4} = 6 × 42\sqrt2

 ⇒ x4−1x4x^4 - \frac{1}{x^4} = 242\sqrt2
