SSC CGL - 13 Aug 2021 - Shift 3 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q73

If x - 1x\frac{1}{x} = 1, then what is the value of x8 + 1x8\frac{1}{x^8} ?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. 47

x−1x=1x-\frac{1}{x} = 1

By squaring both sides,

(x−1x)2=12(x-\frac{1}{x})^2 = 1^2

x2+1x2−2=1x^2+\frac{1}{x^2}-2=1

x2+1x2=3x^2+\frac{1}{x^2}=3

By again squaring,

(x2+1x2)2=32(x^2+\frac{1}{x^2})^2=3^2

x4+1x4+2=9x^4+\frac{1}{x^4}+2=9

x4+1x4=7x^4+\frac{1}{x^4}=7

By again squaring,

(x4+1x4)2=72(x^4+\frac{1}{x^4})^2=7^2

x8+1x8+2=49x^8+\frac{1}{x^8}+2=49

x8+1x8=47x^8+\frac{1}{x^8}=47
