If the selling price of 100 pens is equal to the cost price of 140 pens, find the profit percentage.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 40%.

Let the cost price of 1 pen be X and the selling price of 1 pen be Y.

According to the question:

The selling price of 100 pens = Cost price of 140 pens

100 × Y = 140 × X

YX\frac{Y}{X} = 140100\frac{140}{100} = 75\frac{7}{5}

So, the selling price of 1 pen is 7/5 times the cost price of 1 pen.

Profit per pen = Selling Price - Cost Price

Profit = Y − X = 75\frac{7}{5}X - X = 7X−5X5\frac{7X-5X}{5} = 2X5\frac{2X}{5}

Profit Percentage =  ProfitC.P\frac{Profit}{C.P} × 100

Profit Percentage = (2X5\frac{2X}{5} ÷ X) × 100 = 40%
