SSC CGL Tier II Quant - 17/02/2018 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q77

If 50 less had applied and 25 less selected, the ratio of selected to unselected would have bee 9 : 4. So how many candidates had applied if the ratio of selected to unselected was 2 : 1?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 375

Total applied = x

Selected = y

Not selected = x - y

y / (x - y) = 2/1

y = 2x - 2y

3y = 2x

y = (2/3)x

Also,

(y - 25)/(x - y - 25) = 9/4

(2x - 75)/(x - 75) = 9/4

8x - 300 = 9x - 675

x = 375
