Given x - 1x\frac{1}{x} = 3, find the value of x4 + 1x4\frac{1}{x^4}.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 119.

x − 1x\frac{1}{x} = 3

Square:

⇒ (x − 1x\frac{1}{x})2 = 9

⇒ x2 + 1x2\frac{1}{x^2} − 2 = 9

⇒ x2 + 1x2\frac{1}{x^2}  = 11

Square again:

⇒ (x2 + 1x2\frac{1}{x^2})2 = 121

⇒ x4 + 1x4\frac{1}{x^4} + 2 = 121

⇒ x4 + 1x4\frac{1}{x^4}  = 119
