Find the area of the right angled triangle if the longest side of a right angled triangle is 17 cm and the height is 15 cm.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 60 cm2.

Area = (1/2) × base × height

The Pythagorean theorem states:

a2 + b2 = c2

base = b

hypotenuse (c) = 17 cm

height (a = 15) cm:

⇒ 152 + b2 = 172

⇒ 225 + b2 = 289

⇒b2 = 289 - 225 = 64

⇒ b = 64\sqrt{64} = 8 cm

Area = 12×8×15=12×120\frac{1}{2} \times 8 \times 15 = \frac{1}{2} \times 120  = 60 cm2

Thus, the area of the triangle is 60 cm².
