(4)______ they were caught in the fast current . Two of them were able (5)______ to safety whereas four of them died.

Choose the most appropriate word to fill in blank number 5

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1, i.e. to swim.

Context: The passage talks about how some youngsters jumped into the river and were caught in the fast current. Two of them were saved, so the blank must describe how they were able to escape from the water.

Meaning of the words:
To swim – to move through water using arms and legs
To run – to move quickly on foot (used on land)
To play – to take part in an activity for enjoyment
To drive – to control a vehicle

Correct word: To swim

Reason: Since the situation is about escaping from a river's fast current, “to swim” is the most logical and appropriate word.

Final Sentence: Two of them were able to swim to safety, whereas four of them died.

Hence, the chosen option will be correct.
