At what rate of interest per annum will a sum of 15,625 amount to 19,683 in 1 year 6 months, if the interest is compounded half yearty?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is Option 1 i.e. 16%.

Time = 1 year 6 months = 3/2 years

Compounded half-yearly ⇒ n = 3 half-years

Half-yearly rate = r%

A=P(1+r100)nA = P \left(1 + \frac{r}{100}\right)^n

⇒ 19683=15625(1+r100)319683 = 15625 \left(1 + \frac{r}{100}\right)^3

⇒ (1+r100)3=1968315625=(2725)3\left(1 + \frac{r}{100}\right)^3 = \frac{19683}{15625}= \left( \frac{27}{25} \right)^3

⇒ 1 + r/100 = 27/25

⇒ r/100 = 27/25 - 1 = 2/25

⇒ r/4 = 2

⇒ r = 8% half yearly = 16% annualy
