At an election there were two candidates. A candidate got 38% of votes and lost by 7200 votes. The total number of valid votes is ________.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 30000

Explanation:

Let the total number of valid votes is 100.

Now, the votes of losing candidate = 38% of 100 = 38

The votes of winning candidate = 100 - 38 = 62

According to the given question,

Votes of winning candidate - votes of losing candidate = 7200

⇒ 62 - 38 = 7200

⇒ 24 = 7200

So, total valid votes = (7200/24) × 100

i.e., total valid votes = 30000

Hence the required number of valid votes is 30000.
