A person bought some pens at the rate of 20 for a rupee and sold them at the rate of 15 for a rupee. What is the profit percentage .

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e 33.33 percent.

The person buys 20 pens for 1 rupee, so the cost price (CP) per pen is:

⇒ Cost Price per pen = 1 rupee / 20 = 1 / 20 rupees.

The person sells 15 pens for 1 rupee, so the selling price (SP) per pen is:

⇒ Selling Price per pen = 1 rupee / 15 = 1 / 15 rupees.

Profit per pen = Selling Price - Cost Price = 1 / 15 - 1 / 20

Convert both fractions:

1 / 15 = 4 / 60 , 1 / 20 = 3 / 60

Profit per pen = 4 / 60 - 3 / 60 = 1 / 60 rupees

Profit Percentage = (ProfitCost Price)×100\left( \frac{\text{Profit}}{\text{Cost Price}} \right) \times 100

Profit Percentage = (160120)×100=(160×201)×100=2060×100=13×100=33.33%\left( \frac{\frac{1}{60}}{\frac{1}{20}} \right) \times 100 = \left( \frac{1}{60} \times \frac{20}{1} \right) \times 100 = \frac{20}{60} \times 100 = \frac{1}{3} \times 100 = 33.33\%
