A certain number is subtracted from each of the numbers 20, 24 and 29. After subtraction, those numbers are proportional. What is the number subtracted?

Let's x be subtracted from 20, 24 and 29.

So, (20 - x) : (24 - x) : : (24 - x) : (29 - x)

⇒ (20−x)(24−x)=(24−x)(29−x)\frac{(20 - x)}{(24 - x)}=\frac{(24 - x)}{(29 - x) }

⇒ 580 - 20x - 29x + x2 = 576 - 48x + x2

⇒ 580 - 576 = 49x - 48x

⇒ x = 4
