Which traditional dance from Uttar Pradesh involves women carrying lighted oil lamps on their heads?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

Answer: (1) Charkula

Explanation –

Charkula is an extremely popular folk dance of the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh (primarily Mathura and the surrounding areas). This dance is performed mainly by women on the third day of Holi—specifically on the occasion of Radhashtami. The most unique feature of this dance is that the female dancers balance a multi-tiered, wooden, pyramid-like structure (known as 'Charkula') on their heads. Approximately 108 burning oil lamps are placed upon this structure. It is believed that Radha was born on this very day, and her grandmother, in her joy, performed a dance while balancing a Charkula on her head.

this dance is an integral part of the folk culture of Braj and serves as an expression of devotion to Lord Krishna and of jubilation. During the performance, folk songs are sung that are specifically based on the love between Lord Krishna and Radha.

Additional Points –

Raslila: This is also a dance form from the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, which depicts the divine exploits (leelas) of Krishna and the Gopis (milkmaids).

Giddha and Bhangra: Both of these folk dances belong to the state of Punjab. Giddha is performed by women, whereas Bhangra is primarily a dance performed by men.

Nautanki: This is another renowned folk theatre/dance form of Uttar Pradesh.
