• The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs.
• Kidneys are located near the middle of the back, just below the rib cage.
• The nephron is the basic functional unit of the kidney. 
• Each nephron has two parts – the glomerulus and the renal tubule.
• It removes waste products from the blood and regulates the water fluid levels. 
• Thus, It maintains water balance and expels metabolic waste

Note- Birds have a large number of nephrons (about 200,000 in a fowl, twice as many as in a mammal of equal size), compared to reptiles, which have comparatively few (3,000 to 30,000 in lizards).
