SSC MTS 2022 PYQ — Question 48

SSC MTS - 25 July 2022 - Shift 2 • General Awareness • Q48

Which of the following is a dark reddish coloured stone used as raw material in aluminium smelting?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. Bauxite

Bauxite-

Bauxite – Al2O3.2H2O.is the most common ore of aluminium.

  • The raw material used in the smelters is a very bulky, dark reddish coloured rock. They are mainly made up of aluminum oxide mixed with some other minerals. If the bauxite contains more than 50% aluminum oxide, it's considered as high quality.Approximately 98% of primary aluminum production is based on bauxite.
  • Extraction of aluminium metal takes place in three main stages: mining of bauxite ore, refining the ore to recover alumina, and smelting alumina to produce aluminium. Other raw materials are mined as aluminium ore, but their use is minor compared with bauxite.

Additional information-

Smelting is a form of extractive metallurgy to produce a metal from its ore.

Mica Any of a group of hydrous potassium, aluminum silicate minerals
Gypsum Soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, with the chemical formula CaSO 4·2H2O.
Conglomerate A clastic sedimentary rock made up of rounded clasts that are greater than two millimeters in diameter.
