When the price of an article was reduced by 40% its sale increased by 60%. What was the net effect on the sale?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 4% decrease.

Let the initial price of the article be Rs. x.

The price of the article is reduced by 40%,

New price = x×100−40100x \times {{100 - 40}\over 100}

⇒ 60100x{60 \over 100}x

Let the initial sale of the article be y.

The sale is increased by 60%,

New sale = y×100+60100y \times {{100 + 60}\over 100}

⇒ 160100y{160 \over 100}y

Now money earned initially = xy

Money earned after = 60100x ×160100y{60 \over 100}x\ \times {160 \over 100}y

⇒ 96100xy{96 \over 100} xy

Decrease in money earned = xy - 96100xy{96 \over 100} xy

⇒ 4xy/100

Percentage decrease = 4xy100xy×100{{4xy \over 100}\over xy} \times 100 = 4%

Hence the net effect on the sale is 4% decrease.
