SSC CGL 2021 PYQ — Question 81

SSC CGL - 16 Aug 2021 - Shift 3 • Reasoning • Q81

When number X multiplied to its next number, the product 1260 is obtained. When Number X is added to Number Y, a total of 106 is obtained. Find the value of Number Y. (Assume numbers to be positive)

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 71.

Given that:

x × (x + 1) = 1260

Solving for x,

x2 + x - 1260 = 0

⇒ x2 + 36x - 35x -1260 = 0

⇒ x (x + 36) - 35 (x + 36) = 0

⇒ x = 35 and x = (-36)

(Since numbers are assumed positive, x = -36 will be rejected)

Also given that,

x + y = 106

Putting value for x,

y = 106 - 35

⇒ y = 71
