SSC CGL 2023 PYQ — Question 62

SSC CGL - 26 July 2023 - Shift 4 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q62

What smallest positive number should be subtracted from 2 and 3 so that 4 is the third proportional to them?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 1.

a : b : c

Third proportional of a and b, c = b2a{b^2 \over a}

Let the smallest number to be subtracted from 2 and 3 be x.

4 = (3−x)2(2−x)(3-x)^2\over (2-x)

⇒ 8 - 4x = 9 + x2 - 6x

⇒ x2 - 2x + 1 = 0

⇒ (x - 1)2 = 0

⇒ x = 1
