What is the least value of x + y, if the 10-digit number 780x533y24 is divisible by 88?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. 2.

780x533y24 is divisible by 88

So, 780x533y24 is  divisible by 11 and 8

8 divisibility rule: The last three numbers should be divisible by 8

11 divisibility rule: the difference between the sum of digits at odd position and the sum of digits at even position in a number is 0 or divisible by 11.

For 11 divisibility: 780x533y24

(7 + 0 + 5 + 3 + 2) - (8 + x + 3 + y + 4)

= 17 - (15 + x + y)

y24 is divisible by 8

So, the possible value of y = 0, 2, 6

For least value of (x + y)

Put x = 0 and y = 2 or x = 2, y = 0

7800533224 or 7802533024

both the numbers are divided by 88

So, the least value of (x + y) = 0 + 2 = 2
