What is the average of squares of first 17 natural numbers?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 105.

The sum of the squares of the first ( n ) natural numbers is:

Sum of squares = n(n+1)(2n+1)6\frac{n(n+1)(2n+1)}{6}

⇒ n = 17

Sum of squares = 17(17+1)(2×17+1)6=17×18×356\frac{17(17+1)(2 \times 17 + 1)}{6} = \frac{17 \times 18 \times 35}{6} = 10710 / 6

⇒ 10710 / 6 = 1785

The average is the sum of the squares divided by the number of terms (17):

Average = 1785 / 17 = 105
