SSC CPO - 10 Nov 2022 - Shift 1 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q132

What are the values of x and y, respectively, from the following equations?

6x + 7y = 5xy

10y – 4x = 4xy

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: C

Explanation

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. 2 and 4

The given system of is:-

6x + 7y = 5xy

10y – 4x = 4xy

Taking xy on the L.H.S of the equation in both the equations.

Thus,

⇒ 7x7\over x  + 6y6\over y  = 5
⇒ 10x10\over x  - 4y4\over y  = 4

Let us take 1/x = u and 1/y = v

Thus,

⇒ 7u + 6v = 5

⇒10u - 4v = 4

After solving the pair of equations we get:

⇒ u = 1/2

⇒ v = 1/4

Thus, equating this with their original values

⇒ 1x1\over x  = u =  121\over 2    ,  1y1\over y  = v =  141\over 4

Thus,

x=2, y=4

Thus, 2 and 4 are the Numbers.
