SSC CHSL - 8th July 2019 - Shift 1 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q55

Two students A and B appeared in an exam, A secured 8 marks more than B and the marks of the former was 55% of the sum of their marks. Find the sum of marks obtained by A and B.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 80

Suppose the marks of A and B are ‘a’ and ‘b’ respectively.

a = b + 8

Marks of A is 55% of the sum of marks of A and B:

a = 0.55 × (a + b)

⇒ 0.45a = 0.55b

⇒ a/b = 11/9

2 units = 8

⇒ 20 units = 80

Sum of marks obtained by A and B = 80
