Two circles of radius 15 cm and 37 cm intersect each other at the points A and B. If the length of common chord is 24 cm, what is the distance (in cm) between the centres of the circles?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: A
Explanation
The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 44

OA = 15cm and O'A = 37cm.
AB = 24 cm then AC = 24/2 = 12 cm.
In AOC by using Pythagoras theorem we get,
OC2 = OA2 - AC2
OC2 = 225 - 144 = 81
OC = 9 cm
In AO'C by using Pythagoras theorem we get,
O'C2 =O'A2 - AC2
O'C2 = 1369 - 144 = 1225
O'C = 35.
OO' = 9 + 35 = 44 cm.
