Two candidates contested in an election. 80% of the voters cast their votes, out of which 5% of the polled votes were invalid. The winning candidate got 70% of valid votes and won by a majority of 36,480 votes. Find the total number of voters.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 1,20,000.

Let the total number of voters be 100x.

Total votes casted = 80% of 100x = 80x

Total valid votes = 95% of 80x = 76x

Percentage of votes received by winning candidate = 70% of 76x

According to the given question,

(70% - 30%) × 76x = 36480

⇒ 76x × 40/100 = 36480

⇒ 2x/5 = 480

⇒ x = 1200

Now, total number of voters = 100x = 1,20,000
