There is a 32 l mixture of milk and water. The ratio of milk and water in this mixture is 5 : 3. How many litres of water should be added to this mixture so that the resultant mixture has 50% water in it?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: A

Explanation

The correct answer is option 1 i.e. 8.

the ratio of milk : water = 5 : 3,

so

Milk = (5/8) × 32 = 20 liters

Water = (3/8) × 32 = 12 liters

After adding x liters of water, the new total volume = 32 + x

Since we want the new mixture to be 50% water, the amount of water should be half of the total volume = (12+x)=12(32+x)(12 + x) = \frac{1}{2} (32 + x)

⇒ 12 + x = 32+x2\frac{32 + x}{2}

⇒ 2(12 + x) = 32 + x

⇒ 24 + 2x = 32 + x

⇒ 2x − x = 32 − 24

⇒ x = 8

8 liters of water should be added to make the water content 50% of the new mixture.
