There are two parallel chords measuring 20 cm and 14 cm, both located on the same side of the center of a circle. The distance between the two chords is 3 cm. What is the radius of the circle?

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: B

Explanation

The correct answer is option 2 i.e. 149\sqrt{149} cm.

Length of chord , L = 2R2−d22\sqrt{R^2 - d^2}

⇒ 20 = 2R2−d122\sqrt{R^2 - d_1^2}

⇒ R2−d12{R^2 - d_1^2} = 100      ....(i)

Also, 14 = 2R2−d222\sqrt{R^2 - d_2^2}

⇒ R2−d22{R^2 - d_2^2} = 49     ....(ii)

Given, d2 - d1 = 3

Now subtract (ii) from (i),  R2−d12{R^2 - d_1^2} - (R2−d22{R^2 - d_2^2})  = 100 - 49

⇒ (d2 - d1)(d2 + d1) = 51

⇒ (d2 + d1) = 17

Now, d2 = 10 and d1 = 7

R2−d12{R^2 - d_1^2} = 100

⇒ R2 = 100 + 49

⇒ R = 149\sqrt{149}
