There are two numbers such that the first number is three times of the second number. If the average of these two numbers is 72, then what is the first number?

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e. 108

Let the first number be x then the second number will be 3x

Average = {Sum of observation}/{Total number of observations}

72 = x+3x2\dfrac{x+3x}{2} 

144 = 4x

⇒ x = 36

First number is 3x i.e 3 x 36 = 108
