SSC CGL - 26 Jul 2023 - Shift 1 • Quantitative Aptitude • Q52

There are two circles that touch each other externally. Radius of the first circle with centre O is 12 cm. Radius of the second circle with centre A is 8 cm. Find the length of their common tangent BC.

Show answer & explanation

Correct answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer is option 4 i.e.  868\sqrt{6} cm.

According to the given question,

If two circles touch externally, the length of common tangent can be calculated by using the formula,

Common tangent = 2r1r22\sqrt{r_1r_2}

Where r1 and r2 are the radius of two circles

Given that, r1 = 12 cm

And r2 = 8 cm

Now, in the above figure,

Common tangent = 2r1r22\sqrt{r_1r_2}

⇒ 212×82\sqrt{12 \times 8}

⇒ 2962\sqrt{96}

⇒ 216×62\sqrt{16 \times 6}

⇒ 868\sqrt{ 6} cm

Hence the length of common tangent is 868\sqrt{ 6} cm.
