The sum of the present ages of a father and son is 50 years. If after 5 years, the father’s age will be 5 times the age of the son, then what was the father’s age 5 years ago?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: D
Explanation
The correct answer is option 4 i.e. 40.
Let the present age of the father and son be x and y years respectively.
x + y = 50
x = 50 - y ----(1)
After 5 years,
⇒ x + 5 = 5(y + 5)
⇒ x + 5 = 5y + 25
Putting the value of x from eq. 1
⇒ 50 - y + 5 = 5y + 25
⇒ 6y = 30
⇒y = 5
Therefore, x= 45
Father's age five years ago = 45 -5 = 40 years.
Hence, the age of the father five years ago is 40 years.
